Property Description

Stari grad, the Old Town, is the oldest and most important part of Sarajevo. In the heart of Sarajevo is "Bascarsija", a historical and cultural center of the city. Keyword Bascarsija literally means "trully downtown" or the main retail place, and it marks the area of the downtown square around the so called Sebilj (Arabic work meaninig „road“ but trully it deines a very old charity insitution where water would be schooped for the thirsty), but later this name spreads to the whole nowadays Old Sarajevo's downtown area. Sarajevo's old bazaar is a historical and cultural center of the city established in the 15th century, when Isa beg Ishakovic built the business part of the city in the oriental style. Today's Bascarsija is twice less than it used to be due to fires and wars that took place during the past centuries in this region. It is connected by a dense mosaic of streets and alleys with stores and craft shops, as well as public and religious objects. Until the arrival of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, it was the most developed commercial, economic, religious and administrative center of Sarajevo. Today, Bascarsija is the main tourist attraction of Sarajevo. It really completes the city of Sarajevo. The Commission to Preserve National Monuments has declared Sarajevo's downtown as a national monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Several important cultural and historic buildings can be found here, such as Sebilj, Old Orthodox Church, Kazandzijska Street, Bascarsija Mosque, Bezistan, City Hall, Gazi Husrev-Beg Mosque, Clock Tower, Gazi Husrev-Bey (Kursumli) madrasa, Moric han, Gazi Husrev-bey Library, Gazi Husrev-beg bezistan, the old Jewish synagogue.
