Property Description

Pocitelj, described in Zuko Dzumhur’s travelogues as a “green bearded old man”, is situated on the left bank of Neretva River at the entrance to Capljina from Mostar. The town has a monument which fascinates those who visit it and take their breath away. Built out of stones, this town’s founder is considered to be Bosnian king Tvrtko Ist, with first documents dated from 1383. For centuries military crews came through this town from Hungary, Turkey, Austria-Hungary, with each of them marking Pocitelj with something specific and different.

Pocitelj has many narrow alleys and stone steps that lead to a magnificant viewpoint towards Capljina and further towards the sea. Special treat is the breathtaking view of Neretva river that flows towards Adriatic sea.

Commission to Preserve National Monuments of Bosnia and Herzegovina on February 1st, 2007 nominated Pocitelj to be written into the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites in Europe.
